Peach skin grafts are the future of skin graft surgery, and they’re now a reality for many.
The technology allows the skin to grow again after the grafts have been removed, which is crucial in preventing infection and inflammation.
A major breakthrough came last year, when a Dutch company announced that it had developed a new way to graft skin to a patient’s face.
The company, BioSkin, was founded by two doctors from the University of Exeter and the University at Albany, who had developed grafting technology in the 1990s.
Their new technology has been adopted by major European and US companies.
BioSkin’s technology can grow skin for up to 20 years.
However, because it’s based on natural proteins, it’s far less invasive than traditional skin graft surgeries.
This means that, while some people might have difficulty in their first graft, it should be a breeze for patients.
For the first time, a skin graft procedure is also safe and painless.
The procedure is usually performed with a plastic or metal incision made at the base of the cheekbone, or with a scalpel-like tool.
The grafts will grow normally on the patient’s skin, but after a couple of weeks, they’ll return to normal, and the graft may be removed.
This can be done by simply cutting off a small piece of the skin, and then the graft is reattached.
When the graft heals, the skin is completely different.
The patient’s cheeks and chin can now grow, and skin grafting may become a regular part of their treatment.
Bioskin is now seeking to establish a European branch in Germany, with plans to set up in other European countries as well.
The company’s founder, Dr. Dirk Janssen, has said that his company is focused on developing a system that would replace all grafts.
However he says that it’s too early to talk about commercial applications.
Dr. Jansson is also keen to emphasise that his technology is not for cosmetic purposes.
“It’s just a technology that allows us to take out a large portion of our skin,” he said.
“The graft itself will be removed completely and the patient will return to a normal face.”
He adds that the technology will help people who suffer from severe conditions, such as melanoma, who can’t normally recover from a skin transplant.
“In the past, people had a lot of problems with scarring, with scars that didn’t heal, because the graft was too large and the skin was too thick,” he says.
“Now with this technology, we can make the graft bigger, so the scar is less of a problem.”
Dr. Johansson is also hopeful that the new technology could be used in other types of skin, such a the skin of the head, neck and hands.
“I think that the next step is that the graft can be removed, so that the skin graft can go on and be completely healed, and you can use it as a skin scaffold,” he explains.
“So we could have this system, which could be applied to skin, as a kind of skin prosthesis.”
Dr Janssson says that BioSkin is currently researching the possibility of using the technology to regenerate the skin around the head of a patient who has undergone brain surgery.
“We are looking at how to use the technology in other places as well, like in the neck of a head transplant recipient, or in the skin underneath a head,” he continues.
“But we’re working on it at the moment.”
The new technology may also be used for other areas of the body, such facial and body tattoos.
Dr Jansson hopes that the company’s technology could also be applied in areas such as the eye, the brain and the nose, because skin graft grafting is often painful.
“People who have problems with the eye or the brain, we would love to be able to have a treatment that allows the graft to grow, so they can have their vision or the facial expression restored,” he concludes.
